How to make a door hanger, flyer or yard sign in six steps

  1. Pick a format and a size. Choose door hanger, flyer or yard sign, then a size. To see how it works first, press Load the example.
  2. Type your business details. Add your business name, phone number and website. You can add a PNG or JPG logo, which stays on your device. Or start from a trade starter and edit it.
  3. Write your words. Type a short headline, then three to five offer lines. Press Add an offer for each. Add a callout such as "Free estimate", your service area and a license line if you want one.
  4. Choose a layout and a language mode. Pick one of five layouts and an accent color. Then decide how English and Spanish appear.
  5. Add a QR code if you want one. Enter a web address and a caption that tells people why to scan. A campaign tag is optional.
  6. Download and save. Check the guide lines with Download proof PDF, then press Download print PDF. Press Save job file to edit later.

A free flyer maker for three print formats

This free flyer maker also works as a door hanger maker and a yard sign maker. You type, pick a layout, and download a PDF. There is no sign-up, no watermark and no limit. Everything runs in your browser. Nothing is uploaded, and your logo stays on your device.

Each format has fixed sizes. A door hanger is 4.25 x 11 in (the default) or 3.5 x 8.5 in. A flyer is letter, 8.5 x 11 in, or half-letter, 5.5 x 8.5 in. A yard sign is 18 x 24 in (the default), 24 x 18 in, 12 x 18 in or 24 x 36 in.

Writing words that get read

A door hanger or flyer gets a few seconds. Keep the headline under about eight words. The tool warns you if it runs longer.

Ask for one clear action: call, text or scan. Put your phone number large on every side. Pick one offer and make it easy to see. A callout such as "Free estimate" is the one thing you want people to remember.

Add your service area, so people know you cover their street. The license line is whatever you type. The tool never writes license claims for you.

Trade starters are available for lawn care, roofing, gutter cleaning, pest control, house cleaning and pressure washing. Each one fills the headline, offers, callout and QR caption in English and Spanish. Edit every line to fit your business.

Choosing a layout and a size

There are five layouts per format. Bold has a colored headline band and a dark contact bar. Clean is a white page with an accent stripe. Dark is a near-black page with bright text. Split has a colored top block and a white lower part. Frame has a thick border and centered text.

All five are high contrast, because a door piece is read quickly. If your accent color is too pale or too dark for its use, the tool darkens or lightens it so the text stays readable.

Big type matters most on a door hanger. The smaller 3.5 x 8.5 in size fits less. On a flyer, letter has room for more offers, while half-letter is easy to hand out.

Type sizes are checked as warnings, not blocks. Body text should be at least 10 pt, and the headline at least 24 pt (20 pt on a 3.5 x 8.5 in hanger).

Door hanger design: the hole and the tear-off

A door hanger needs a hole for the knob. The tool draws a guide circle for it. The default is 1.5 in across, with its center 1.1 in from the top, and you can change both. Print shops disagree, roughly 1.2 to 1.75 in across, so ask your shop for its template.

A keep-clear ring of 0.5 in surrounds the hole. The tool places no text inside it, and the ring moves with the hole.

You can also add a tear-off line, at a distance you choose from the bottom (the default is 2 in). The area below it becomes a small coupon with the callout and your phone number. Text stays 0.25 in clear of the line.

The guides show on screen and in the proof PDF. The print PDF leaves them out, because print shops cut from their own template. To cut at home, tick the option to draw the hole outline.

The PDF is a vector file at final size, with real text. Download proof PDF adds guide lines: blue for the trim edge, green for the quarter-inch safe line, orange dotted for the bleed edge, and the hole ring on a door hanger. Download print PDF is the clean file, with black text in pure black, in one ink. Text always stays at least 1/4 in inside the trim.

You can add 1/8 in of bleed on every side. A 4.25 x 11 in file then becomes 4.5 x 11.25 in. Crop marks start 1/8 in outside the trim.

  • At home, print at 100 percent or "actual size". Never choose "fit to page".
  • Use heavier paper, print one test first, and cut carefully.
  • At a print shop, ask for their template, whether they want bleed and crop marks, and the hole size.
  • Send the print PDF, not the proof, and ask to see a proof before the full run.

Yard sign template tips: legibility and materials

Use few words on a yard sign. The legibility meter shows your word count and warns above seven words. It also shows an approximate reading distance from the capital-letter height of the headline.

As a comfortable rule, count about 10 feet of reading distance for every inch of capital-letter height. In ideal light it can reach about 30 feet per inch. These are rough guides. Dark text on a light background reads best. Check local sign rules before you place a sign or a door hanger.

Yard signs are usually printed on corrugated plastic with a wire H-stake. Ask your print shop which way the flutes run, because the stake slides in along them. Keep text at least half an inch from the edge.

Adding a QR code and a campaign tag

On a door hanger, the back is a good place for a QR code. Keep it away from the hole and the fold. Print it at least 0.8 in (2 cm) wide.

A caption is required. The default is "Scan for a free estimate", or "Escanee para una cotización gratis". The print buttons stay off until the caption is filled or the web address is cleared. A link too long for any QR code is refused with a message.

A campaign tag is optional. It adds three parts to the link only: utm_source (door-hanger, flyer or yard-sign), utm_medium=qr and utm_campaign with your tag. Use a different tag for each street or batch, and your own web statistics can show which piece brought a visit. The tool itself counts nothing.

Test the printed code with two different phones.

Bilingual flyer tips and your privacy

For a bilingual flyer, you type English and Spanish side by side for the headline, offers, callout, service area, license line and QR caption. The tool never translates. Have someone who speaks Spanish check every line, including starters.

There are four language modes: English only, Spanish only, English front with Spanish back, or both languages stacked on one side. Two pages are easier to read than two languages crowded together. With two pages, each side is complete. The phone number appears on both unless you turn it off, which raises a warning.

Keep the same offer on both sides, and plan for the Spanish to run longer than the English.

Nothing is stored in the browser or on a server. Press Save job file to download a small file, and open it again with Open a job file.

Frequently asked questions

What size is a door hanger, and where does the hole go?

The sizes are 4.25 x 11 in (the default) and 3.5 x 8.5 in. The guide circle is 1.5 in across by default, with its center 1.1 in from the top, and you can change both. Print shops differ, roughly 1.2 to 1.75 in across, so ask yours for its template.

Do I need bleed and crop marks?

Not for a home printer. Ask your print shop. Bleed adds 1/8 in on every side.

Can I print my flyer at home?

Yes. Print at 100 percent or actual size, never fit to page, on heavier paper.

How big should the letters on a yard sign be?

As a rough guide, count about 10 feet of reading distance per inch of capital-letter height. In ideal light it can reach about 30 feet per inch.

How do I add a QR code?

Enter a web address and a caption. Print the code at least 0.8 in (2 cm) wide. Test it with two different phones.

Can I make a flyer in English and Spanish?

Yes. Type both languages side by side, then choose English only, Spanish only, English front with Spanish back, or both stacked on one side.

Where can I hang door hangers or place signs?

Check local sign rules. They differ by place, so ask your city or county before you start.

Is this flyer maker free?

Yes. It is free, with no sign-up, no watermark and no limits. Everything runs in your browser.

Does it translate my words?

No. You type English and Spanish yourself. The trade starters give you editable text in both languages, and a Spanish speaker should check it.

What does the campaign tag do?

It adds utm_source, utm_medium=qr and utm_campaign to the QR link only. Your own web statistics can then show which piece brought a visit. The tool itself counts nothing.
